The Alberta Primary Care Initiative

The Alberta Primary Care Initiative is a trilateral agreement between the Alberta Medical Association (AMA), the Regional Health Authorities (RHA) and Alberta Health & Wellness (AHW).

The goals of the Alberta Primary Care Initiative are:

To increase the proportion of Albertans with ready access to primary care.

To provide coordinated 24-hour, 7-day-per-week management of access to appropriate primary care services.

To increase emphasis on health promotion, disease and injury prevention, care of medically complex patients and care of patients with chronic diseases.

To improve coordination and integration with other health care services including secondary, tertiary and long-term care, through specialty care linkages to primary care.

To facilitate greater use of multi-disciplinary teams to provide comprehensive primary care.
