Behavioral Health Consultants

Behavioral Health Consultants (BHCs): In this innovative new position, mental healthcare providers from various disciplines work in family physician clinics as primary care team members. Providing brief, consultation-based services to patients using an integrated care model. Consultants address a wide range of mental and behavioral health concerns with the goals of prevention, early identification, quick resolution, and health promotion.

Services Provided:

Mental health concerns are very common, the ofter occur when people expierence chagnes in their physical, social, emotional, mental or spiritual health. Whether you are expierencing stress in your life, or are supporting someone who is, BHC's can help you. Behavioral Health Consultants address a wide range of mental and behavioral health concerns including anxiety, stress, grief, smoking cessation, chronic pain, life transitions, loneliness, weight management and relationship concerns. Consultations are approximately 20 to 30 minutes in duration and utilize interventions that emphasize patient decision making, collaboration and readiness for change. After assessing your concerns, the BHC will work with you to develop a plan. They may suggest a number of strategies including: self-management exercises, referral to community resources or followup with your family physician.

Eligibility:

  • You are a patient of a physician from the SCPCN who has a BHC at their office. As family physicians are such an integral part of this model there must be a BHC at your family physician's clinic in order for you to access this services. Ask your family physician to determine if there is a BHC at your clinic.
  • You are dealing with issues that impact your emotional well-being.

Referral Process:

  • Physician Referral Required: Yes
  • Self Referral: No

Additional Information:

  • Additional Fee for Service: No. Your visit(s) with the BHC are free of charge. If the BHC refers your to community programs or counseling services there may be a cost to you.
  • Free Parking: varies depending on physician clinic

If you do not have a family physician, or your physician does not have a BHC at their office you can access mental health services at the South Calgary Health Centre. For more information please call  Access Mental Health 403-943-1500.

If you need to access urgent mental health, please go to the nearest hospital.
